A person with a disability is any person who:

  • has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more life activates including walking, talking, seeing, hearing, breathing, learning, and working
  • has a record of such an impairment
  • is regarded as having such impairments

Some common disabilities are:

  • Hearing and Visual Impairments
  • Orthopedic/Mobility Disorders
  • Psychiatric/Psychological Disabilities
  • Specific Learning Disabilities
  • Acquired Brain Injury

A person meets the academic and technical standards required for admission to or participation in a program of study with or without reasonable accommodations.

Some accommodations or services Include:

  • An individualized Classroom Accommodation Form, if desired
  • Extended time for class/work projects/test
  • Preferred seating in classrooms
  • Permission to use audio tapes for classroom lectures
  • Tutoring
  • Sign language interpreters, readers, or note-takers
  • Magnification software
  • Other assistive technology
  • Referral to agencies serving people with disabilities

West Central Technical College offers accommodations and services to assist students with disabilities to achieve their education goals.

Student responsibilities

To establish eligibility, students must request services by contacting the Director of Counseling and Special Services as soon as they are accepted to ensure timely services.

Student must:

  1. Provide appropriate documentation which is no older than three years or normed on adult scales (psychological or cognitive) for the disability.
  2. Provide recommendations for classroom accommodations.
  3. Present accommodation from and discuss with each instructor appropriate accommodations.

If a student has never been evaluated to establish eligibility for a disability, or is in need of a current evaluation, the Director of Counseling and Special Services may refer the student to the appropriate resource agency at the expense of the student, if there is a fee involved.
