On Tuesday, more than 30 businesses and numerous job seekers filled the West Central Technical College (WCTC) Conference Center during the Douglasjobs.com Career Fair. The fair, which was co-sponsored by the Douglas County Chamber of Commerce, featured businesses ranging from nationally-known chain retailers like Wal-Mart and Best Buy to locally-based businesses like DeNyse Signs. “Sometimes there are companies in the county that people are not aware of, so this is a great opportunity for Douglas County residents,” said Connie Britton, personnel manager of the Wal-Mart on Highway 5.
While the event was open to everyone in the community, it was designed who live in the county but work elsewhere. “We want to focus on the commuters who work out of town, which is why we scheduled this fair so late in the day,” said Lois Gerstenberger, chairman of the chamber’s Workforce Development Committee,. Human Resource Manager Pam Brown worked DeNyse Signs’ booth, and she also said that part of the focus is to inform Douglas County residents of job opportunities that are close to home. “We’ve got a lot to offer to local residents,” she said. “We are a local business and our workers want to be locals, too.
Other residents of the county were expected to benefit, including WCTC students. “This event is uplifting for the campus and the community as well,” said Lisa Doney, director of WCTC’s Douglasville campus. There were also booths with information to aide job seekers, one of which was run by Tammy Collins, center/technology coordinator of Mercer University’s Douglas County Center. “Nowadays, it is imperative to have a four year degree, so we provide second chances for students that have jobs and families,” she said. After more than 200 event maps were handed out in the first 30 minutes, Douglas County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kali Boatright was pleased with the afternoon’s turnout. “This has been awesome so far, and it ahs been the first opportunity that the chamber has had to pair great jobs with great people,” she said.
