Home court advantage proved decisive for the West Central Technical College Golden Knights Saturday, as the friendly crowd in the Whitesburg City Gym cheered them on to a 42-41 win against the Tigers of Griffin Tech.
The home crowd grew more vocal during the second half, with neither team able to gain a foothold over their opponent, and as it became apparent that the Knights might hold on for their first-ever win.
“We really had a good time today,” WCTC President Dr. Skip Sullivan said. “Our home crowd seemed to be the encouragement our team needed to hold off a late charge by the Tigers.”
Sullivan, who also took announcing duties for the Knights, said he was pleased with the crowd for the first home game. College staffers were on hand with free T-shirts, water bottles, pom-poms and rally towels to outfit the fans.
The Knights scored first, and held the lead through most of the low-scoring contest. However, they could never mount much of a lead over the speedy Tigers. At halftime, the Knights were up 24-21.
Center Reggie Nation – a 6’3” Central High School graduate – led the Knights with 12 points. Charlie Satterwhite out of Villa Rica High scored nine.
Garyeon Boykin, also a Central alumnus, had eight points, including two three-pointers. One of the threes came late in the final period and all but locked up the win for the home team.
“It was a great day,” Sullivan said. “We scored our first win ever and had a good, competitive game for our home crowd.”
The WCTC Knights improve to 1-5. The GTC Tigers drop to 1-5.
The Knights play in Whitesburg again February 23 at 2:30 p.m., facing the undefeated Mustangs of Northwestern Tech. Admission is free.
West Central Technical College, with campuses in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas and Haralson counties, offers over 90 associate degree, diploma and technical certificate programs of study. A unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, West Central last year served over 10,000 students including credit enrollment, adult education, ESL classes, continuing education and corporate training.
