Meet the Golden Knight Men's Basketball Coaches
Head Coach Roy “Buddy” Knapp
Coach Knapp is no stranger to the West Georgia area as he coached at Mt. Zion and Carrollton High Schools for twenty years. Knapp was head boys basketball coach at Carrollton High School from 1977-1987 with a record of 152-94, four state tournament teams, and three Carroll County Championships. While at Mt. Zion during the 1990’s, he was head coach of both football and boys basketball.
Knapp’s reputation includes “program builder,” which is one of the reason’s he was selected as head coach for the Golden Knights as they start their first season of intercollegiate basketball. Prior to his arrival at Carrollton, the Trojans had not competed in a state tournament for more than ten years. At Mt. Zion, the football program benefited from his leadership earning their first Region Championships in 1990 with a repeat the following year and making eight post season appearances during his tenure. Other career highlights include Notasulga Alabama High School and Coosa High in Rome. At Notasulga he lead the basketball team to the state tournament for the first time in ten years with a Final 8 appearance. While he was coaching football at Coosa High, he brought the Eagles from a twenty-six game losing streak back to a respectable and competitive team. The Rome News Tribune recognized his rebuilding efforts at Coosa by selecting him their 1999 Coach of the Year.
Prior to coaching, Knapp was named Outstanding Male Athlete at Southern Union College. He later transferred and graduated with a B.S from Jacksonville State and a M.S from the University of West Georgia.
His awards include 8 Coach of the Year Awards, All Star Coach, Athletic Director of the Year, Mr. Zion Hall of Fame, Notasulga Hall of Fame, and recognition by Governor Frank Harris for his work in Drug Prevention and by the United States Department of Justice for work with their Sports Drug Awareness Program.
Prior to accepting the position as Head Coach of the Golden Knights Men’s Basketball Team, Mr. Knapp also served as a community coach at Chattooga High School for both football and basketball programs.
