What are the GED Tests?
The General Educational Development Tests (GED Tests) can give you the opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma, a credential recognized as a key to employment opportunities, advancement, further education, and financial rewards. The following information will answer many of the questions you may have about the GED Tests.
The GED tests are five (5) tests in the areas of Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Reading, and Mathematics. The questions in each of these tests require you to use general knowledge and thinking skills. The questions which ask about facts, details, or definitions are based on paragraph readings.
Although you have not finished high school, you have probably gained knowledge and skills through experience, reading, and informal training. The GED Tests are designed to measure the important knowledge and skills, usually learned during the four (4) years of high school, that you may have obtained in a different manner.

If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must receive special permission from the State Office of Adult Literacy to take the tests. No scores will ever be given over the telephone.
The State Office of Adult Literacy will mail official scores and diplomas in 4 to 6 weeks. If you are in an Adult Education class, your teacher, with your permission, may receive your scores for all tests except Writing within 7 days after testing.
These test dates are subject to change. Please call our office at 770-947-7323 or 770-838-2535 for confirmation or if you should have any further questions.

What if I need to retest?
You must take all five tests before retesting on any test. You may not retest on any test until you have received a score on your Writing test. If your Average Standard Score after receiving scores on all five tests is below 400, you must wait 6 months before retesting. If your Total Standard Score is 400 to 429, you must wait 3 months before retesting. If your Total Standard Score is 430 or better, you may retest immediately. However, attendance in adult education classes is recommended. You may take each test only 3 times during the year, and you may not take each test form more than once. If you are retesting, you must bring a copy of your previous scores to registration and testing. Retests are $19.00 per test.
